Discovering the Old Testament
Alec Motyer
Alec Motyer shows us how the Old Testament points to the same way of salvation as the New. Correctly understood, the Old Testament belongs to all who believe in Jesus. Law and grace are not poles apart: in the New Testament God gives his law to those to whom he has shown grace, as a pattern of life that delights him. The Bible is not two halves, but one book, a cumulative revelation, centring and climaxing in Jesus.

By understanding God's covenant with Abraham, we learn much about God's character: his faithfulness, patience and kindness. Yet sin invites punishment, and God does not turn a blind eye when his people disobey, as they all too frequently do. The stage is filled with characters, often the most unlikely ones, fulfilling God's purposes for their generation.

Alec Motyer has been a Bible lover since childhood. 'This book is about the Old Testament as it thrills me, ' he explains. His desire is to share that thrill with others, enabling them to tackle Old Testament books with confidence and enjoyment.

Alec Motyer was Principal of Trinity Theological College, Bristol, and a vicar in London and Bournemouth before retirement. His writing career spans nearly five decades and includes "Treasures of the King" and "Journey" (both IVP). He lives with his wife Beryl in Poynton in Cheshire.
